Dog Breeds Health Issues Sunshine Coast
There are a myriad of dog breeds, each of which have their own unique health issues. For those who live in Valdora, whether along the Maroochy River or in another part of the Sunshine Coast, it is important to understand what potential health issues the dog you choose may face during their lifetime.
What follows are the traits of ten popular dog breeds according to All Animal Vets. Although the sheer number of different breeds makes it impossible to discuss in a single article, there are some health traits with common breeds that you need to know.
Beagle
The Beagle is subject to epilepsy more than most other breeds. Symptoms will start to appear from six months to three years, so be on the lookout if you choose a Beagle that has yet to reach that age. If they are epileptic, there is anti-seizure medication available.
Bulldog
As you might suspect from their distinctive “smashed-in” face, bulldogs are subject to breathing issues which can be problematic if they overheat or get exhausted and cannot breathe in enough oxygen.
Cocker Spaniel
The long ears of a Cocker Spaniel mean a higher risk of ear infections. You will need to clear their ears every couple of weeks, especially if they live outside.
Dachshund
As you might suspect from their build, this breed is subject to back and spinal disk issues. The easiest way to avoid many of these issues is to keep them at a healthy weight. Also, try to keep them from jumping up or down from heights at Valdora and not climbing stairs as this puts pressure on their back.
German Shepherd
Because of their size, the German Shephard is subject to hip dysplasia which may cause them over time to have issues walking. They may also develop arthritis or suffer from pain when moving.
Labrador Retriever
Although any dog can get fat, the Labrador Retriever is more subject to becoming overweight compared to most other dog breeds. You will need to watch their diet and make sure they get plenty of exercise at the Maroochy River.
Poodle
This breed is subject to glaucoma, which can be treated with medication in the early stages or surgery if needed on the Sunshine Coast.
Pug
These adorable dogs may have issues with their protruding eyes. The tendency for the eyes to come out of their sockets may happen if they get into a fight. Take your pug to the vet immediately if this occurs.
Shih Tzu
These adorable dogs tend to have weak or wobbly kneecaps. This means that their kneecap may pop out of place which causes the dog to skip a step or limp. You can pop the kneecap back into place, but in extreme cases surgery may be needed.
Yorkshire Terrier
A condition known as portosystemic shunt which bypasses the liver may cause considerable health issues unless corrected by surgery.
Whether you live in Valdora, along the Maroochy River, or anywhere in the Sunshine Coast, it pays to know the health tendencies of the dog you choose for your home. Also, be sure they get checked out by the local vet at All Animal veterinary Services on a regular basis to keep them healthy and happy.
