Consultations & Physical Examinations:
Our veterinarians are well qualified to deal with a wide range of animal ailments from various sicknesses to injuries. We are also here to implement and advise on a wide range of preventive measures such as parasite control and disease prevention. We recommend pets at least have a thorough physical examination once a year (& twice yearly in our Geriatric pets … see “Geriatric Medicine”). Back to the list of services
Vaccinations:
Many of the severe, often fatal diseases in our pets such as Distemper, Parvovirus, Feline Enteritis and Cat Flu, once common are starting to recur with alarming frequency with dire consequences. Therefore, we continue to recommend yearly vaccination of our patients to reduce environmental contamination by virus, and to maintain a pool of protected pets to prevent outbreaks of these serious diseases. This yearly vaccination fits in well with the annual check-up. Back to the list of services
New Puppy and Kitten Consultations:
New puppies and kittens are seen at 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks of age for vaccinations, worming, heartworm treatments, etc. At these visits we offer detailed guidelines and advice to ensure the best of future health for your pet. Giveaway packs with products and information are provided at the first visit. Back to the list of services
Emergency and After-hours Services:
Emergencies, such as road trauma or poisoning cases, are handled promptly and efficiently at our surgery. In the hours that we are open (Weekdays 7.00am to 6.00pm; Saturdays 8.00am to 12noon), please contact the surgery ahead of time to let us know that you are on the way. This will allow us to be prepared, ensuring the emergency is handled in the best way possible.
After-hours emergencies (eg. weekday nights, weekends and holidays) are handled by the AES at Chancellor Park. To contact them, ring first on 5445 1333. They will give you directions to their centre. Let them know that you are a client of this practice so that their treatment records can be forwarded to us to add to your pet’s file and a follow-up can be done if required. Avian, Pocket Pet, Wildlife & Exotic Pet Medicine:
We frequently examine and treat guinea pigs, pet rats and mice, including desexing and other minor surgeries. Anything requiring more detailed specialist treatments are referred on to our Brisbane Bird and Exotics. Exotic pets such as reptiles are handled and treated by Sian Hillard who has an active interest in this area. Any medical attention needed for bats is referred onto wildlife rescue group in Eumundi who are fully vaccinated and equipped to work in this field.
We also offer a free service to any injured or ill wildlife. Initially, such animals are examined and assessed by us, then treated if necessary. Those able to be rehabilitated are handed on to Wilvo carers for convalescence and release back in to their natural surroundings. Back to the list of services
Pre-Export Work:
Our practice is unique in the area, being accredited to perform pre-export procedures on dogs, cats and birds. This Federal government (DAFF Biosecurity) delegated-task involves complying with the requirement of each country to which a pet is being sent. It involves advice on requirements, physical examinations, testing procedures, treatments and detailed certification. Back to the list of services
Large Animal Work:
Because of the dramatic demographic changes in our area over previous years, we have found a marked decrease in the need to provide involved large animal services. However Dr Sian Hillard has a special interest in sheep and goat medicine, having plenty of her own, and will happily treat hobby farm animals as such. We will often treat sheep, goats and calves and are happy to do farm visits for these if required. We also welcome you to bring your farm animal to the vet clinic. We also carry out routine worm counts for sheep, goats and horses. Detailed equine work is referred to our neighbouring or specialist large animal practices. Back to the list of services
Grooming:
We have a fully qualified and experienced pet groomer on site. Clients are welcome and encouraged to come and meet Michelle and discuss any special requirements to suit your pet. More difficult clippings (e.g. matted Persian cats), can be done by the nurses or veterinarians under sedation. Hydrobathing facilities are also available. Back to the list of services
Behavioural Problem Consultations & Resolutions.
One of the most common reasons why pets are abandoned or re-homed is because of behavioural problems. We offer comprehensive advice and treatment in this area. Where appropriate, cases requiring more detailed work are referred to trainers or behavioural specialists. Back to the list of services
Heartworm Treatments:
Heartworm disease is becoming more and more prevalent. Luckily we now have very effective treatments available. Traditionally a monthly heartworm tablet has been used with success and is still readily used. However we now recommend a yearly injection for Heartworm prevention as a more convenient and efficacious option. Back to the list of services
Geriatric Medicine:
One of the most important areas of work in our practice is the maintenance of good health without pain or suffering in pets as they age. With proper care, most pets are living enjoyable lives many years in excess of what could have been previously expected. Ensuring that our beloved elderly pets have the highest quality of life possible is one of our most important goals, we aim to provide this to the best of our ability. We have the experience, programmes and medications to help ensure this is achieved. Back to the list of services
Dentistry:
Our surgery is very well equipped to handle dental problems encountered in our pets. We routinely provide dentistry care to cats, dogs and even guinea pigs. We are also strong advocates on maintaining dental health in our pets as part of the lifelong care that they require, offering advice and support through proper diet and the like. In more detailed dental cases, such as root canal filling, we refer cases to dental specialists. Back to the list of services
Cardiac Evaluations:
Some patients are susceptible to heart disease such as mitral valve regurgitation, cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. We use physical examination, ECG monitoring, cardiac auscultation and radiography to evaluate heart patients. Further detailed evaluation is referred to a specialist veterinary cardiologist. Vastly improved heart evaluation and the new cardiac drugs available these days, make cardiac disease much better managed today than in the past. Back to the list of services
Hip and Elbow Scoring:
Some large breeds are prone to heritable orthopaedic diseases such as hip dysplasia. Prior to breeding we recommend scoring of hip and elbow X-Rays to ensure that these traits are not passed on to the next generation of puppies. This is done by radiographing the hips and elbows under a general anaesthetic. The X-Rays are then forwarded on to specialist-recognised evaluators for scoring. Back to the list of services
Anaesthesia:
We are fully aware of anaesthetic risk in our beloved pets. Although the risk is extremely slight (less than 0.3%), the risk rises as our pets age and develop other health problems. For this reason, we are careful to examine the pets prior to surgery and tailor our anaesthetic regimes to suit our patient’s needs. The anaesthetic agents that we use routinely are amongst the safest available in veterinary medicine at present For additional safety, our anaesthesia equipment utilizes fluid therapy, patient monitors for respiration, pulse and blood oxygenation.
We offer and recommend pre-anaesthetic blood profile testing to all our patients, which enables us to examine the animal’s body for internal problems before surgery commences. Such problems may be hidden and not obvious externally, despite a physical examination. This further ensures safety with anaesthesia.
We consider analgesia (pain relief) as a crucial part of any surgery that we perform. For this reason, we will routinely administer adequate additional analgesia at to any surgical procedure that we consider painful in any way. Back to the list of services
Radiology & Imaging:
Our hospital is equipped with high quality digital radiography. This enables us to take high-quality X-Rays for many routine procedures such as orthopaedic, soft tissue and contrast work. CT scans and other detailed imaging procedures are referred to the relevant veterinary specialists here on the Sunshine Coast. Back to the list of services
Ultrasonography:
We offer ultrasonic examinations which are an important diagnostic tool for examining internal structures and organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys, intestines and so on. It is also ideal for pregnancy testing which we routinely do for our breeder clients. Dr Chris Pearson has a keen interest in ultrasonography and is always updating his skills with workshops and continuing education. Back to the list of services
Orthopaedic Surgery:
We are well equipped to perform many types of orthopaedic procedures, including most fracture repairs, dislocation reductions, cruciate rupture repairs and patella surgery. More detailed or complicated orthopaedic surgery are referred to our mobile surgeon Dr Ben Clarke from Advanced Animal Surgery or North Coast Veterinary Specialists (Dr Richard Mitchell) at Chancellor Park. Back to the list of services
Soft Tissue & Laser Surgery:
Our surgery is extremely well equipped to handle most types of general surgery. Some of the common procedures that we perform routinely include :-
- Desexings (spays & castrations)
- Tumour & lump removals
- Wound repair
- Exploratory laparotomies and abdominal procedures
- Enterotomies and other gastro-intestinal procedures, gastropexies.
- Hernia repairs
- Eye & eyelid surgery
- Soft palate and nares resection (BOAS)
- Anal sac flushing and removal
- Ear surgery
Being a progressive practice, we are proud to be one of only a handful of veterinary surgeries within Australia with a surgical laser, imported from the USA in late 2010. This laser allows us to perform surgery with much more precision, less haemorrhage, less pain and with a quicker recovery than with normal surgery using a scalpel and scissors. Back to the list of services
Pet Identification & Microchips:
It is important to clearly and unmistakably identify all pets. We do microchipping to assist in this task. Microchips, are small (about size of a rice grain), inert devices that are implanted painlessly under the skin (between the shoulder blades). Each microchip has a unique barcode number that remains with that pet for life. We use international Iso chips (15-digit) that are now used worldwide. The number and owner details are recorded on central databases, accessible 24-hours per day. By reading the number by a hand held scanner, the chip can be read and the animal and owner identified. Most veterinary practices, welfare centres and local government pounds carry microchip readers and utilise them fully. This ensures pets are being returned home quickly and much more efficiently than in the past. Back to the list of services
Specialist Services:
Our practice provides a central point on the Sunshine Coast for regular monthly visits by Dr Mike Shipstone, a veterinary dermatologist. He services clients referred from adjoining practices as well as our own.
We also regularly refer cases to specialists and specialist centres in Brisbane. For example, these cover the areas of reproduction, oncology, and internal medicine. Back to the list of services
Home Visit Service:
Our practice will carry out home-visit consultations to examine and treat pets. However, in the interests of practicing quality veterinary medicine, we would encourage clients, where possible, to bring their pets to the actual surgery for examinations and treatments. This allows us to use our facilities, equipment and trained staff to handle your need in the best way possible. We also offer a in home euthanasia service to provide comfort and compassion to both yourself and your pet at that difficult time. Back to the list of services
