Paralysis Ticks and Your Pet ...

Early detection and treatment are essential to maximise the chances of recovery for your pet

To protect your pet from Tick Paralysis


Adult Paralysis Tick
Ixodes holocyclus

(1). Avoid where possible, exposure to bush areas known to harbour ticks.

(2) Check your pets daily
Use a systematic approach starting with the nose and slowly examine face, eyes ears and lips (including inside mouth and ears.) Remove the collar and check through the body under arms, in elbows, folds of skin, legs, between toes and pads. Examine chest, back, belly, around tail and anus, and back legs.

(3) Remove ticks
Rapid kill. Use a rapid knock down insecticide such as pyrethrin (fly spray or insect repellent) Spray the tick until saturated and remove tick once it is dead (1 –2 hours later).

Rapid removal. Quickly remove the tick without squeezing the abdomen. Special tick hooks are available and are very effective.

(4) Preventatives for Paralysis Control
“Proban” tablets administered every second day
Rinses and sprays (e.g. “Fido’s Rinse & “Permoxin”).
Top Spot Applications (“Frontline” & “Advantix” applied every 2 weeks)
Tick collars (“Preventic” & “Kiltix” applied every 6-8 weeks)
