Consultations & Physical Examinations:
Our veterinarians are well qualified to deal with a wide range of animal ailments from various sicknesses
to injuries. We are also here to implement and advise on a wide range of preventive measures such as parasite control and disease prevention. We recommend pets at least have a thorough physical examination once a year (& twice yearly in our Geriatric pets … see "Geriatric Medicine").
Vaccinations:
Many, once-common, pet viral diseases (e.g. Distemper, Parvo and Cat Flu) have been virtually eliminated from the Nambour area due to regular pet vaccinations. We continue to recommend yearly vaccination of our patients to reduce environmental contamination by virus, and to maintain a pool of protected pets to prevent outbreaks of epidemics of these serious diseases. This yearly vaccination fits in well with the annual check-up.

New Puppy and Kitten Consultations:
New puppies and kittens are seen at 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks of age for vaccinations, worming, heartworm treatments, etc. At these visits we offer detailed guidelines and advice to ensure the best of future health
for your pet. Giveaway packs with products and information are readily provided.

Puppy Pre School Classes:
Classes are run on a regular basis at our clinic. They provide the opportunity for socialisation and basic training, as well as being informative and lots of
fun for both the pups and their owners. |

Emergency and After-hours Services:
Emergencies, such as road trauma or poisoning cases, are handled promptly and efficiently at our surgery. In the hours that we are open (Weekdays 7.30am to 6.00pm; Saturdays 8.00am to 12noon), please contact the surgery ahead of time to let us know that you are on the way. This will allow us to be prepared, ensuring the emergency is handled in the best way possible.
After-hours emergencies (eg. weekday nights, weekends and holidays) are handled by the PetER at Chancellor Park. To contact them, ring first on 5445 1333. They will give you directions to their centre. Let them know that you are a client of this practice so that their treatment records can be forwarded to us to add to your pet’s file and follow-up can be done if required.

Avian, Wildlife & Exotic Pet Medicine:
We examine and treat birds of all varieties for various illnesses and injuries. Any detailed cases are referred to avian veterinary specialists. Other exotic species (e.g. snakes) are referred to specialists.
We also offer a free service to any injured or ill wildlife. Initially, such animals are examined and assessed by us, then treated if necessary. Those able to be rehabilitated are handed on to Wilvo carers for convalescence and release back in to their natural surroundings.
Pre-Export Work:
Our practice is unique in the area, being accredited to perform pre-export procedures on dogs, cats and birds. This Federal government
(A.Q.I.S.) delegated-task involves complying with the requirement of each country to which a pet is being sent. It involves physical examinations, testing procedures, treatments and detailed certification.

Large Animal Work:
Because of the dramatic demographic changes in our area over the last few years, we have found a marked decrease in the need to provide involved large animal services. Consequently, such detailed and regular large animal work is referred to neighbouring or specialist practices, We do, however, offer free advice on any large animal matter and will treat portable farm animals such as calves or sheep which can be brought in to the surgery. We also carry routine work counts for sheep, goats and horses.
Grooming:
We have a fully qualified and experienced pet groomer on site. Clients are welcome and encouraged to come and meet Michelle and discuss any special requirements to suit your pet. More difficult clippings (e.g. matted Persian cats), can be done by the nurses or veterinarians under sedation. Hydrobathing facilities are also available.

Heartworm Treatments:
Heartworm disease has been effectively controlled with the very efficacious monthly treatments now available. We now also recommend a yearly injection for Heartworm prevention.
Dermatology Workups:
Skin diseases and problems are one of the most common things seen at our practice. We aim to diagnose all our dermatology cases following detailed historical and physical examination, and using tests such as cytology and skin scrapings. Problem cases are readily referred to our visiting dermatologist, Dr Michael
Shipstone.

Behavioural Advice:
One of the most common reasons why pets are euthanased, abandoned or re-homed is because of unacceptable behavioural problems. We offer comprehensive advice and treatment in this area. Where appropriate, cases requiring more detailed work are referred to trainers or behavioural specialists.
Geriatric Medicine:
One of the most important areas of work in our practice, is the maintenance of good health without pain or suffering in pets as they age. With proper care, most pets are living enjoyable lives many years in excess of what could be expected only 20 or less years ago. Our established Senior Pet Programme is one of the most worthwhile and highly recommended pet wellbeing practices that we have ever
implemented.

Dentistry:
We also regularly refer cases to specialists and specialist centres in Brisbane. For example, these cover the areas of reproduction, oncology, and internal medicine.

Cardiac Evaluations:
Some patients are susceptible to heart disease such as mitral valve regurgitation, cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. We use physical examination, ECG monitoring, cardiac auscultation and radiography to evaluate heart patients. Further detailed evaluation is referred to a specialist veterinary cardiologist. Vastly improved heart evaluation and the new cardiac drugs available these days, make cardiac disease much better managed today than in the past.

Hip and Elbow Scoring:
Some large breeds are prone to heritable orthopaedic diseases such as hip dysplasia. Prior to breeding we recommend scoring of hip and elbow X-Rays to ensure that these traits are not passed on to the next generation of puppies. This is done by radiographing the hips and elbows under a general anaesthetic. The X-Rays are then forwarded on to specialist-recognised evaluators for scoring.
Anaesthesia:
We a fully aware of anaesthetic risk in our beloved pets. Although the risk is extremely slight (less than 0.3%), the risk rises as our pets age and develop other health problems. For this reason, we are careful to examine the pet’s prior to surgery and tailor our anaesthetic regimes to suit out patient’s needs. The anaesthetic agents that we use routinely are amongst the safest available in veterinary medicine at present (although a little more expensive). For additional safety, our anaesthesia equipment utilizes patient monitors for
respiration, pulse and blood oxygenation.
We offer and recommend pre-anaesthetic blood profile testing to all our patients, which enables us to examine the animal’s body for internal problems before surgery commences. Such problems may be hidden and not obvious externally, despite a physical examination. This further ensures safety with anaesthesia.
We consider analgesia (pain relief) is an important part of any surgery that we perform. For this reason, we routinely administer additional analgesia at a small additional charge to any surgical procedure that we perform and that we consider painful in any way.

Radiology & Imaging:
Our practice performs high-quality radiology (X-Rays), suitable for all routine radiological procedures in a veterinary practice, including orthopaedic, soft tissue and contrast work. Detailed radiology, including myelograms, are referred to Queensland Veterinary Specialist at Stafford Heights in Brisbane. CT scans and other detailed imaging procedures are also referred to the relevant veterinary specialists.
Orthopaedic Surgery:
We are well equipped to perform many types of orthopaedic procedures, including most fracture repairs, dislocation reductions, cruciate rupture repairs and patella surgery. More detailed or complicated orthopaedic surgery are referred to North Coast Veterinary Specialists (Dr Richard Mitchell) at Chancellor Park, or Queensland Veterinary Specialists in Brisbane.
Weight Reduction
Programs:
We encourage clients to bring their pets in to the surgery on a regular basis for free regular weighings to assist with weight management. We can also provide professional advice on weight management and reduction in your pet if required.
Pathology:
Our practice is fully equipped with laboratory diagnostic equipment including an Idexx VetTest and VetReader machines (for detailed blood tests). We also carry out urinalysis,
faecal testing, blood & serological disease profiles (eg. for heartworm, feline AIDs), cytological (for
microorganic and cell biology) and other in-house tests. More detailed laboratory tests are forwarded to veterinary diagnostic laboratories.

Pet Identification & Microchips:
It is important to clearly and unmistakably identify all pets. We provide pet tags and microchips to assist in this task. We have an excellent range of quality tags that can be engraved with the relevant details. You can view the range available next time you are at the Surgery.
Microchips, are small (about size of a rice grain), inert devices that are implanted painlessly under the skin (between the shoulder blades). Each microchip implanted has a unique barcode number that remains with that pet for life. We use international Iso chips (15-digit) that are now used worldwide. The number and owner details are recorded on central databases, accessible 24-hours per day. By reading the number by a hand held scanner, the chip can be read and the animal and owner identified. Most veterinary practices, welfare centres and local government pounds carry microchip readers and utilise them fully. This ensures pets are being
re-homed quickly and much more efficiently than in the past.

Dr Mike Shipstone -
Dermatology
Dr Mike Bernays -
Ophthalmology
Dr Gary Wilson-
Dental & Oral Services
We also regularly refer cases to specialists and specialist centres in Brisbane. For example, these cover the areas of reproduction, oncology, and internal medicine.

Home Delivery, Pickup & Home Visit Service:
We do offer within the Nambour area, a free pickup and delivery service for pets. Also, we are willing to deliver products to your doorstep if desired. To utilize this service, you should give the surgery advanced notice so that a vehicle and staff can be organised to carry out the task.
If desired, our practice will carry out home-visits to examine and treat pets (for a small additional fee). However, in the interests of practicing quality veterinary medicine, we would encourage clients, where possible, to bring their pets to the actual surgery for examinations and treatments. This allows us to use our optimum facilities, equipment and trained staff, to handle your need in the best way possible. |
